National AI Policy Making — Part 1: Challenges and Opportunities

There’s a race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) domination but only a handful of powerful nations are in it. Other countries are playing catch up and time is not on their side.

National policy making for new and emerging technologies is never easy. There is the uncertainty inherent in new technologies, all the usual challenges of policy making ranging from politics to personalities and use of resources. AI is a broad term with applications to all aspects of our lives — economic, social and personal. Even as the massive disruption by AI and automation is sneaking up on us whether we are ready for it or not, we have to remember that AI is not a silver bullet and comes with its own set of challenges and limits.

My goal for this series of articles is to explore AI policy making through these lenses. This series can be used as a starting point for decision and policy makers who may be interested in learning about AI, what policy angles are important for a nation given its specific situation (e.g. demographics, skills) and how it compares against what AI front runner nations.
